About

Varnish Fine Art is a contemporary art gallery in San Francisco that exhibits emerging, mid-career and established artists. Known for showing provocative and skillfully executed fine art work of sculptors & painters, their emphasis is on Pop Surrealism. Varnish is committed to giving a home to edgy, challenging, accessible fine artwork that revels in its technique. Their exhibits stimulate the mind, delight the eye and share the directors’ passion for art with the community.

Since it’s founding in 2003, Varnish has fostered emerging artists who work outside of the mainstream. They have also exhibited such artistic luminaries as Ron English in a 2005 solo show, “Son of Pop”, and the obscure genius, Stanislav Szukalski, a 20th century Polish sculptor, in the only major US gallery show in recent decades, “The Self-Born”. Varnish was also the first to exhibit the painter Chris Mars in San Francisco and the first fine art gallery in San Francisco to give the internationally exhibited Pop Surrealist, Michael Page, a solo show.

True to its original mission, Varnish is a lively and vital part of the San Francisco community. It’s establishment by directors Jen Rogers & Kerri Stephens, passionate art collectors who forged a relationship while working together in a fine art foundry, helped to spark a revitalization in SF’s downtown and became a force in what has become the Yerba Buena Arts District. The gallery and its directors continue to nurture the community by forming long-term bonds of support with their artists and providing a gathering space for art lovers and community minded citizens to rally.
